How to Cook for People with Allergies

So, You want to cook for people with allergies? First, find out what the allergy is for. Then understand where you can find them. If it is peanuts find out if almonds are an allowable nut. Since Almonds are a Tree nut, and in the nut family (depending on whom you talk to), most people can eat them. Still better to be safe.

What if you have to cook for someone who has an allergy to eggs? Simple, skip the deviled ones. Or.. Maybe not so simple. Having a full understanding of which products contain eggs and egg whites is just as important as not making icing for a cake. Your friend maybe able to eat a cake that has been made with eggs but offer a variety of salad dressings. This is often a common element to foods that many of us who are cooking for someone with allergies may not know about.

Milk is also a highly common allergen. While we can avoid the dairy section at the grocery store it may not be as avoidable in other areas. Let us say that you are serving a steak and lobster dinner to you boss and her husband who has a lactose allergy. Now, while you may skip the World Famous Fettuccine Sauce that has Epi-Pen written all over it, you may also want to consider directly ordering from the butcher. Why you ask? Because if the person before you asked to have 2 Lbs of cheese sliced and diced the cutting machine may still have some kinds of cheese remaining. You would not want to be cooking that cheese or any remnants of it into that steak or anything else for that matter.

Wheat and wheat products. Ok this is going to be a bit tougher. You are basically guaranteed to have to look, read and watch every single step of cooking for someone who has a wheat allergy. Soup (unless homemade), breads, pastas, beer. All out. An idea for this allergy safe dinner may be to consider Thai or Chinese food. DO NOT ORDER. Making it yourself is easy and ensures that there is no MSG in the meal. (Which also by the way has peanuts in it.)

Soy is another big one. And it may seem like you can avoid it no problem. But if you are considering going easy on the pocket book and going prepackaged instead, be prepared for an allergic reaction. Most processed foods contain this as an ingredient. Helping to absorb the taste of the foods is just one of the many reasons Soy is added. Better to cook it yourself and enjoy the dinner.

Fish and Shellfish is more easy to avoid if you are cooking for people with allergies. It is pretty general as to where you will find these friends of the water. Tuna, crab (real and man-made), sushi are all a given. But take a quick peek at the back of your salad dressing. Caesar to be exact. Better check the Omega 3 Enriched Balsamic as well. This is the main ingredient that allows companies to promote the Omega 3 Fatty Acids that have increased their sales while promoting better taste and healthier lifestyle. The Balsamic Vinaigrette in my fridge says nothing about it being fortified with Omega 3, but it is clearly listed on the back along with the other nutritional values.

Needless to say, cooking for people with allergies is no easy feat. But it is a learning experience you will never forget. I love cooking for people with allergies because it helps remind me to read the labels and know exactly what I am making. You automatically become more conscience. Another tip to remember when cooking for people with allergies is to consider the spices.

Not everyone uses fresh or packaged spices. Some places or people use liquid spices to "salt it up" and they clearly state on their ingredients Peanuts. Although the steps You can take as a person cooking for someone with allergies, we have clearly seen that some of the obstacles are more then just avoiding their specific trigger. As a result keep in mind some of the additional triggers and places to find them. It will make your life easier and a meal more delicious to make when you are cooking for someone who has allergies.
